How to Clean Your Diamond Jewellery?

Lotions, styling products and everyday grime tend to leave a thin layer of dirt on your diamond ring and keep it from looking its finest. Moreover, if you wait too long between the washings, the dirt tends to accumulate into a thick layer of grime on the back of your diamond ring. This blocks some or all of the light that reflects from the diamond and makes it appear dull and lifeless.

Many chemical coatings are used to enhance diamonds and can sometimes be removed by harsh chemicals or vigorous scrubbing. Thus, it’s imperative to be very careful when cleaning the diamond ring.

If the build-up is mild, a home cleansing remedy would add the shine back to your favorite diamond ring. However, for more intense dirt, consider getting them professionally cleaned.

For a simple home made cleanser without the use of harsh chemicals, make a mixture of one cup of hot water with 2 teaspoons baking soda. Let the ring sit in the mixture for a few minutes before rinsing it with water. When out, your diamond rings will sparkle like brand new.

Another method to clean the ring is by soaking it in warm water and mild liquid detergent for about 10 minutes so that it loosens any build-up or debris. Once out, add a dab of toothpaste to a soft brittle toothbrush and begin brushing the ring. Make sure the bristles are soft as the stiff ones can be rigid on the surface to scratch the ring’s metal setting. Rinse the ring in a bowl and remove all toothpaste and lay it flat to dry.Soap-and-water

Both the methods mentioned above are safe for cleaning diamonds, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, platinum and silver. The methods should, however, not be used on opals, pearls or other semi-precious stones as they are softer and more prone to scratching.
