Over the last few years, more and more fashion brands from the haute couture district are venturing into the watch district. Be it Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci or Tommy Hilfiger, the list really is endless. However, are  these watches really worth it? Some of them are quiet expensive, even for the watch enthusiasts. Are they worth the price they charge and do these high fashion brands really need to add timepieces to their portfolio?

For decades, watches have been believed to be a constituent or facet of fashion as an object of utility and passion. In the  majority of conventional shopper magazines, they fall under the ‘accessories’ class. Moreover, in earlier days watches were sold in department stores between the suit and sock departments.

Bearing in mind that people were purchasing watches to match with their attire, fashion companies started to put forward their own watches. The trend became popular in the 1980s when mass production of watches started in Asia.

Today, most of the bigger fashion brands have watches to sell. Though in actuality quality and propriety of these watches can diverge considerably. Moreover, there really isn’t an apparent association connecting the brand value and the watch value.

In most cases, the watch sales aren’t as profitable when compared to the clothing business. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Ermenegildo Zegna among others manufacture high-end timepieces but only use them as halo products and not chief profitable money making items.

These products are only there to raise brand image and to attract a certain number of clientele who desire to own a comprehensive brand range. The truth really is that the pricier the fashion brand watches are, the less enthusiastic people are when it comes to purchasing them.

In the haute horology world, these fashion brands are tolerated but not particularly very thrilled with their existence. In fact, it is often viewed that many of these brands incorporate existing designs and try to pass them off as their own.

On the other hand, this isn’t unanimously the case at all. In many cases, consumers pay ‘designer premiums’ for fashion watches that would otherwise be priced a lot lower. Having said that, we are happy to admit that there is abundance of fashion brand watches we love to wear.

Many brands like Gucci, Bulgari and Chanel have a long and interesting history when it comes to making beautiful watches. It just takes a little familiarity, experience, investigation and research as a judicious consumer to discover which brands make timepieces worth looking at and whose timepieces make you feel you would like to leave them for others.
